A while ago we visited Handmade Hopes in the Oosterstraat in Groningen. We’d been there before, but never thought of making pictures for our blog even though we really love some of the things they sell. Handmade Hopes is an interior and gift store and even outside you are being seduced by cute bagpacks for kids, toys and lovely postcards. For (real) mail junkies like us, you have us inside in no time!
Handmade Hopes sells a combination of second hand, new and handmade products. Second hand are for instance the old fashioned cups and saucers and the vintage cupboards. Handmade are the postcards, posters, stuffed animals and jewellery. New are the backpacks, Danish crockery and the plants (cactusses of course).
In the back of the store there’s a workshop (not accesible) where creative youngsters with a distance to the labor market can get an apprenticeship. A pedagogic assitant guides them and they learn a day rhythm and social skills. The youth can also sell their own creative projects in the store. All those products have a label ‘Made by’ with the name of the person who made it. On the website of Handmade Hopes you can check out who made your product and what this person’s story is.
Also good to know: Handmade Hopes has an in store mini library where you can bring books you’ve read and take something home you want to read. Also books in other languages!
