Sunday is going to be the most
roman…, I mean pink day of the year: a day of hearts, cuddly toys and chocolate. Valentine’s day… Weeks ahead Pinterest is taken over by pins about love and gifts, every flyer in your mailbox is all about how to conquer the heart of your loved one and every store seems to know exactly which gift you have to buy. Only 4 nights left and this love sugary sweet, commercial festivity starts.
We are very fond of Valentine. And of course we mean Valentijn Bentinck; the main character in the Dutch series Heer & Meester (Actor: Daan Schuurmans. It’s being broadcasted on Thursdays on NPO1, around 8.30 pm). The other Valentine? … Oh well… We love the thought of an anonymous declaration of love: don’t you just love the excitement of the feeling that somebody really likes you? And the suspense of who it might be?
All the pink in the stores however…we already see Marie Kondo rolling over in her empty house right now! All the chocolate and stuffed animals don’t give us any loving or romantic feelings. Wouldn’t it be great to just forget all about Valentine’s day? We can hear the shop owners scream ‘nooooooh’ already. What would it be like to act more on the following tips?
“Every day is Valentine’s day” – Valentijn Bentinck
- Tell the people you care about how much you appreciate them and what they mean to you.
- Be original and creative. Use these qualities to surprise your parents, brother or sister, friends and your life partner with a gesture that shows that you care about them.
- Spend real time with the people you love: turn of your phone, switch of the TV. Be there without any distractions and give all your attention to the one you are spending time with.
- Oooh, did you have the courage to send someone an anonymous card? Wow, impressive and courageaous! Don’t forget to take the next step: make sure the person who received your ‘declaration of love’ knows it was you. It’s to big of a compliment to keep secret, be proud of your gesture and the fact you took a chance.
How do you feel about Valentine’s Day, and what do you do to make the people you love feel appreciated in everyday life?
