A few times I have been wanting to order an acai bowl in a restaurant, but the high price always turned me off a bit (approx. €9). I decided to look for frozen acai myself but here in The Netherlands it was only available through post order or you had to go for the powdered version which does not sound nearly as good to me. I had almost forgotten about the whole acai thing when by surprise I noticed frozen acai at Jumbo when I was looking at the vegan sherbet icecream section. Jumbo now sells 1 person portions for only €1,29 and it’s almost 70% acai (the rest is guarana and some other stuff). Guarana is kind of like coffee for energie and there’s nothing wrong with that in the morning, right?
With 1 frozen package of acai I prepare 2 breakfasts. On the package it says to use one with 2 bananas but I thought 2 bananas was a bit much so I decided to use half with just one banana. When I prepare a bowl my bottom layer is something like soy quark or (plantbased) yoghurt and on top of that I’ll use the acai/banana mash. This way you can create your own budget bowl with for example seasonal fruit or frozen fruit from the freezer that’s been thawed.
A few days later I tested the frozen guave (same section at Jumbo) and I have to say I definately prefer that one! It’s 100% guave and it’s a lovely fruit. It’s only 80 cents which is a bit cheaper if you compare. So, GO guave bowl! Guave always reminds me of a 2004 holiday to Cuba when we were staying in an all inclusive resort and I was already a veggie. The only things to eat for dinner were rice and black beans but they did have a wide variety of fruits and I loved the guave. So yum! Good memory.
Ingredients for 1
guave acai bowl:
1 package frozen açai puree from Jumbo (right next to sherbet icecream in freezer) (about 50 grams) – or just go for guave 😉
1 (slighty frozen) banana
2-3 large tbsp of soy quark or -yoghurt or any other yoghurt of choice
handful fruit of choice
some seeds, pits, nuts and/or granola
Spoon the yoghurt in a bowl. Puree the banana and the (slightly thawed) acai puree and pour over your yoghurt. Decorate with any fruits of choice and other toppings. Make it as pretty as you can or just throw it on if in a hurry. Tip: search #smoothiebowl on Instagram and you’ll get the most beautiful bowls for inspiration. Enjoy your bowl!
What do you have for breakfast, a bowl by any chance? And would you prefer aguave or acai?
