Do you ever think about what you put on your skin? Have you ever read the (mostly very long) lists of ingredients in a skincare product? Often those products contain vague ingredients (either chemicals or incomprehensible substances). We’ve been wondering for a while now if all those ‘spreads’ are actually good for your skin and body. That’s why we’ve both been buying only natural and mostly organic products for some time. And occasionally we make products ourselves. In this article you get to meet Leafon, 2 sisters that started a natural skincare line. They will be joining us at the Vegan Fair in Groningen in just 2 weeks!
Melanie and Celine, 2 sisters, are the faces behind natural (and vegan) skincare company Leafon. They try to live as sustainable as possible. For example by producing less waste. They use reusable wascloths to remove their make-up, they avoid plastic bags for keeping food and they buy their outfits mostly second-hand: “It’s sustainble and it gives you a good feeling at the same time,” they tell us. You can also recognize this sustainable aspect as a big part of their company Leafon.
How did you get the idea for Leafon?
“We started to read more about the ingredients of the products we used and became more and more aware of the quite strange ingredients. A lot of these ingredients are not necessary in skincare products. We wanted to make a difference. We started with doing lots of scientific research. After that we became our own guinea pigs. We really liked the products we made. People around started asking if they could try them as well. Their reactions to our samples were very positive, so we started to get convinced we could make other people happy with our products. In July 2017 we started our company for real. In the beginning that meant attending lots of markets and events but now we have a few selling points in stores throughout The Netherlands.”
Working together with your sister, yes please or no go?
“We complement each other well and if one of us had started this on her own, she would not have been where we are now doing this together. It’s great to have someone to discuss the business with and to chase a joint dream together. It’s kind of a challenge to keep business and private matters seperate though. We are both so enthousiastic that we are never done talking about Leafon.”
What do you hope to achieve for the future?
“We hope that the number of people that cares what they put on their skin grows daily and that they will choose our natural skincare products. Our dream for Leafon is to have a Leafon outlet in every big city or to have our own Leafon stores,” they say with enthousiasm.
