Making laundry detergent is one of the easiest DIY’s. It’s much cheaper than store bought detergent, you get to pick your favourite scent and it’s better for the environment than a chemical detergent. Today we explain to you, step by step, how to make your own in only about half an hour time (and a waiting period of 12 hours). A supply of 6 liters will only cost you about € 6,-. Cheap, right?
I always really hated having to buy new detergent. Most of the brands smell too strong, which sometimes gives me a headache. My search for more sustainable brands was a bit disappointing: I didn’t like the smell and quality. My worst experience was with the Albert Heijn brand: it made my laundry smell so bad (smokey even) I immediately washed it again with another brand of laundry detergent.
Back in the time Anneloes was working in Winschoten, her colleague Annie gave her this ‘recipe’. She made 6 liters of laundry detergent and gave me half of it. She told me how she made the detergent but to me it seemed like a lot of work (grating soap and all that). But I couldn’t let Anneloes do all the work every time. So after a few times, about a year ago, I decided to try it myself. To be honest: my mom did most of the work. She measured the soda and grated the soap. Together we boiled 6 liters of water and mixed it with the soap and soda. It turned out to be such an easy DIY. Now Anneloes and I both make detergent regularly. And we hand out bottles to friends and acquaintances too, to let them try it.
Recipe for 6,25 liters of laundry detergent:
– 100 g natural soap, for example Sunlight or Marseille…
– 100 g soda
– 6,25 liters of boiled water
– Optional: a few drops of essential oil (choose your favourite scent).
Stir thoroughly and make sure all the grated soap dissolves completely. Leave the mixture to rest for about 12 hours. Stir again and pour into empty bottles (for example old empty packages of store bought detergent).
Your homemade DIY laundry detergent works the same as a store bought one: you can use the same ammount as other liquid detergent.
– Add a little bit of white vinegar (1 or 2 tbsp) to your laundry, together with the detergent. It softens the water a bit.
– Shake the laundry detergent well before using it.
What kind of laundry detergent do you use? Do you also make this yourself?
