One of us says something. And oops, our inspiration button has been pressed, our brains start working immediately and that thing one of us said turns into an idea. An idea for an event for example. And before we know it, we have said yes and are the proud owners of a full schedule: weeks filled with activities to organize the event. Something we started without any hesitation or thinking through. Does that sound familiar to you, or would you never dive in without thinking things through? In the past years we organized all kinds of activities: blogbars, vegan pot lucks, vegan high teas, an international bloggers meet-up. And the list continues. Great fun, right?! Or maybe not? That’s what we talk about in this blogpost.
Anneloes: I think meeting new people is 1 of the fun things about organizing events. Our blogbar is a great example: getting together, working together, sharing knowledge and having fun at a nice location in Groningen. These blogbars are easy to organize (it hardly takes time), which makes it even more appealing.
Janet: that really appeals to me as well: it’s almost no work organizing and lots of sociability and inspiration from other bloggers. We do not have that at every event. We keep wanting ‘more’ and new things as well. So a real challenge was organizing the International Bloggers Meet-Up (#IBM050). It was quite a challenge to get 15 international bloggers together in Groningen in one weekend. They all had to stay somewhere and there was only a very small budget available. I always start very expeditiously because the first steps of the proces are always my favourite: from idea to reality. After that it became quite stressful at time, a little bit overheated but in the end we were amazingly succesfull. So… time for something new to try. That’s what we thought afterwards. Right?
Anneloes: time for something new? Yes of course! But what… And then the owners of De Oude Gasfabriek asked us to organize a vegan fair. And, without hesitation we jumped to this opportunity and said yes. Again, not well thought out before saying yes, so another leap of faith. Lucky for us, we already have some experience organizing events. Still, there will always be small hick-ups or things we didn’t see coming. Challenges, some easier to solve than others.
Janet: when organizing a small event , you largely control how things are going. But when an event gets bigger, you get more and more dependent on other parties. When you are in the flow, it does not mean that everyone else is too. For us it’s a really important event and we get in kind of a rush, but for other people who we need help from usually not so much. All the emails, telephone calls, app messages and the waiting, those are my least favourite things.
Anneloes: Janet nailed it. Waiting is not one of our finer qualities. I can be quite impatient and like to arrange everything as quickly as possible. And in the best way possible. Sometimes we disagree about what is best. In retrospect we can always laugh about our differences. But next to our opinions we have to consider the opinion of our business partners as well, of course. And what can you do to solve a disagreement? Moments like that can be challenging but informative too.
Janet: Up until now everything always turned out very well. And looking back on an event I sometimes think: “Why do I even bother so much. It will all turn out well eventually.” Just not always exactly the way you wanted it, but that’s life. We don’t always have a say in how things turn out. And after every event on the one hand I experience a feeling of: pffew, THAT was a LOT of work and I am so happy it’s over and we con concentrate on other things for a while but on the other hand we really get a big kick out of it. When the big moment is finally there, the moment you have been working towards for weeks, and if you can conclude during or at the end: “Wow, we really just did all this.” That’s so amazing.
Anneloes: it’s a challenge to organize a super great event, in a small amount of time. An event everybody is enthusiastic about. It’s so much fun looking back and realizing all of our events have been a succes until now. Happy visitors/ participants and pleased companies and business partners. And that’s what makes it all worth while! So will we continue organizing events? Definately yes!
