One of our favourite things to do is search the internet for travel destinations on a budget. These searches have become part of our holiday fun. And yes, it’s quite a challenge finding the perfect travel destinations fitting our budgets. In the beginning of 2017 we stumbled upon very cheap flights to Timisoara. But because a Romania expert adviced against going on a city trip there, we weren’t sure about booking flights right away. And, Romania is known for mostly serving meat. After some online research we booked anyway. In this article you can read all about our veggie food adventures in Timisoara.
We went to Bio Fresh 3 times during our 5-day stay in Timisoara. Two out of the three times a vegan and raw piece of cake was our dessert. Bio Fresh is a vegetarian, mostly vegan but they use honey, restaurant with lots of great dishes on the menu. We recommend trying the veggie balls with spicey tomato sauce, the raw vegan courgetti with avocado sauce and the spring rolls filled with veggies served with a spicey red sauce. All delicious! And their cakes, wow… A few of the best raw cakes we ever had.
Boema restaurant serves Lebanese food. We ordered falafel, broad beans, fatoush salad and spicey Lebanese potatoes. Eventhough Boema restaurant is not a very cozy place, we recommend it. They have quite a lot of vegan dishes and their food is tasty and budget friendly.
You’ll find Jolie in the middle of the city center. Their interior is nice, but it was hot and sunny so we choose a table on the terrace to have lunch. Our order: a simple pasta with veggies, a soup and bruschetta. It was a simple but tasty lunch. And again, budget friendly just like all the other places in Timisoara.
Lucky for us, in Timisoara you can find a lot of great places where they serve vegan drinks. Because it was really hot in Timisoara during our visit, we didn’t ask for hot coffee and plantbased milk. But, you can find (fresh) juices, delicious lemonades and other drinks everywhere.
Janet always does a lot of online research to find the best veggie places for us to go. The website HappyCow is our most used tool for finding veggie restaurants. But in this case, on HappyCow were not so many options to find. Therefore it only seemed logical to book an apartment with a kitchen. Lucky for us Timisoara turned out to be suprisingly vegan friendly, so we only used the kitchen to prepare breakfast.
- At Tucano Coffee we had some lovely iced coffees. This coffee bar also offers vegan food (for example healthy snacks) and fruit smoothies. They have a lovely terrace where you can people watch 😉 (If you want a drink, you’ll have to order inside.)
- At Piata Unirii we had some lovely drinks at the Emotion Café and its neighbours. All the terrases here have a sprinkling system which is really great when it’s around 40 degrees Celsius. They all serve lovely homemade lemonades with different fruits, smoothies, iced teas and also (for vegetarians) iced coffees and milkshakes. They do not serve food at all.
- In the same row as the baroc palace we had vegan pizzas on a cheap looking terrace. They had a sign offering a cheap deal. It turned out to be a great and cheap dinner.
- At Italian restaurant Locanda del Corso, on the Strada Marasesti, we had pasta for dinner one night. Just order pasta without cheese (there are a few on the menu). Tasted good!
