Planning on visiting Groningen? You have probably already heard of the well known vegan spots in our city, like Anat (breakfast, lunch, coffee and cake), De Herbivoor (lunch and Thursday dinner), and the vegan choices on the Concerthuis menu. But what if you want to go out to dinner and you have some non-vegan friends in your group who are not really looking forward to eating plantbased this time? We’ve got some great tips for you. At these 5 restaurants you can just go in without calling in advance about your vegan diet and everybody can eat what he or she prefers. Enjoy!
Tip 1: Café-bistro Kult
Not until recently did we find out about Kult. And we really love it! You can enjoy a great plantbased meal here, just as your non-vegan pals. They have everything from great drinks (maté, Fritz, chai…) to dessert (how about vegan tiramisu?) and for a main we would suggest trying the amazing nut fondue. Mmmm!
Location: Steentilstraat 36-1, Groningen
Tip 2: Buurman & Buurman
If you feel like really good pizza, then Buurman & Buurman is your restaurant. The drinks are very 2018. This cosy cafe next to Noorderplantsoen is always crowded. With work benches to sit on and have your dinner from, it’s mostly al fresco dining in summer and easily crowded in winter. Make a reservation if it’s a ‘sit inside’ day. You can also get your pizza as takeaway.
Location: Rodeweg 6, Groningen
Tip 3: De Oude Gasfabriek (also see intro picture)
De Oude Gasfabriek is located in the Ebbingekwartier, a new and raw part of the city center, with street art and used to be factories. De Oude Gasfabriek has a lovely menu with lots of vegan choices (usually 4 vegan mains). The cooks really like to hear your thoughts about the food (so don’t hesitate to ask questions and give advice) and the desserts are sublime. We love it here.
Location: Langestraat 66, Groningen (behind The Student Hotel)
Tip 4: Wereldburgers
A sustainable burger restaurant that is for the most part organic and homemade; that’s Wereldburgers next to the Der Aa kerk. There’s choice in 3 vegan burgers. For dessert you can choose vegan cake or Professor Grunnschnabel icecream. Perfection, right?
Location: A-kerkhof 43, Groningen
Tip 5: Pernikkel We love to visit Pernikkel for breakfast. Or for lunch. Or coffee. Or dinner. They have a vegan plate with hors d’oevres, they always have a vegan main and a salad and you can get vegan breakfast. The menu changes weekly and they post it on Facebook, so you can check it out beforehand. Great space and usually you can just walk in to have a bite to eat.
Location: Aweg 2, Groningen
Voilà tastes like a Michelin star restaurant from the first course to the last, but it actually isn’t. We absolutely love this one. It’s a bit more expensive than the ones above. And you have to call in advance here if you prefer to eat vegan; no problem though – your meal will be an amazing experience. Location: W.A. Scholtenstraat 39, Groningen
